What is my first step toward lung transplant surgery?

Your lung transplant journey begins with a thorough evaluation to determine the best treatment plan for you. This evaluation is designed not only for our team to learn about you but also for you and your family to get to know us.

Lung transplants are some of the most complicated surgeries, but the Norton Thoracic Institute at St. Joseph’s is amongst the best in the nation. We will walk by your side through every phase of preparation, through the surgery itself, and as you recover afterward and adjust to life with your new lungs.

Will I have to wait for my new lungs?

After your evaluation, you will be placed on the lung transplant list with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). The average wait time for a lung transplant is 15 days, but your time may vary based on your individual needs. Once you are accepted as a transplant candidate, you may be called to the hospital at any time.

What happens after surgery?

Healing from your lung transplant surgery takes time. After you are discharged you will be closely monitored and part of your recovery includes participation in our rehabilitation program. Our specialists will work with you to receive the best possible care for your new lungs wherever you are located.
